A new immigration program started in January of 2013 is opening the door to skilled labor from abroad. Is it possible that Canadian immigration laws will attract the brightest and best from around world? This new immigration stream holds out hope for many

(OPENPRESS) Vancouver, BC -- On Fri Aug 16 2013, Canada welcomed their first skilled trades workers from Ireland in a new immigration program launched January 2 2013. It was designed to help fill trades positions needed across the country. Now that the first skilled tradesmen have been admitted officially, they gates are open to more skilled trades men and women.

Official requirements for acceptance are as follows:

Quote:
"1. Applicants must have an offer of employment in Canada or a certificate of qualification from a province or territory to ensure that applicants are "job ready" upon arrival;

2. They must meet a basic language requirement;

3. They must have a minimum of two years of work experience as a skilled tradesperson, to ensure that the applicant has recent and relevant practice as a qualified journeyman; and

4. They have the skills and experience that match those set out in the National Occupational Classification (NOC B) system, showing that they have performed the essential duties of the occupation."
End Quote:

Just reading the official requirements may require a lawyer, so half the battle may be the ability to hire people to help open doors. Kidding aside, Canada is now accepting up to 3,000 applicants in the first year and among those will be tradesmen from Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania and India.

Official Government Position

"The Federal Skilled Trades Program will complement other avenues already in place for skilled tradespersons to immigrate to Canada, such as the Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Programs. Eligible occupations will include electricians, welders, heavy-duty equipment mechanics, and pipefitters, among others"

This all started with the Economic Action Plan of 2012 and is expected to add a new dimension to the growth of the Canadian population. In the past employers like Mr. Rooter plumbing has hired immigrants and put them through apprentice programs to get Canadian certification, but that was the old standard which has frustrated many skilled people and professional in the past.
