The British government has just announced it is scrapping plans to construct a road tunnel under Stonehenge, the UK's most important World Heritage Site.

(OPENPRESS) December 22, 2007 -- The British government has recently announced that it is scrapping long-term plans to construct a road tunnel under Stonehenge, the UK's most important World Heritage Site. Transport Minister Tom Harris said: "Allocating £500m for the implementation of this scheme cannot be justified."

In recent year's heritage and tourism groups have pushed for the development of the site including a new, cutting edge heritage interpretation visitor attraction centre at Amesbury and an ambitious 1.3-mile tunnel scheme that would reduce traffic-related damage to the historic site and improve Stonehenge's setting.

Heritage Destination Consulting (HDC) worked with English Heritage and the Salisbury Tourism Partnership on some of the initial assessment and scoping of the project back 2003. Professor John Veverka, Senior Partner of HDC said "Stonehenge is an internationally recognised visitor attraction and one of Britain's most important tourism assets which attracts many thousands of visitors to the region every year. However our research back in 2003 identified that there was no simple or cheap heritage interpretation planning solution to developing the site and it is no surprise that in the current economic climate and with escalating costs the government's enthusiasm for this project has been chilled."
