Beverly Hills, CA (The Open Press) September 18, 2008 -- As women get older we're told to expect certain symptoms. Lack of energy, thinning hair, night sweats, emotional swings, weight gain we can't reverse, decreased libido and dry skin are among the most common. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the usual solution but often doesn't relieve most of the symptoms. So, we turn to extreme diets, mood-enhancing drugs and anti-aging skin care products. Why didn't the HRT work? Although your symptoms may be hormone-related, the precise hormones causing the problems may have been misdiagnosed.
Most HRT replaces estrogen. Since estrogen production decreases as we age and causes many of those symptoms, it's logical to assume lowered estrogen levels are the source of the problem. However, the same symptoms, as well as fatigue and concentration problems and feeling a bit like a zombie, are also symptoms of another condition known as hypothyroidism. In fact, hypothyroidism is grossly undiagnosed and treated. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists estimates that hypothyroidism is a problem for 10% of Americans - of all ages - and that more than half are never diagnosed. For those who are diagnosed, the treatment is often ineffective.
Why? Because doctors, thinking they already know the source of the problem, don't test for it, or the tests don't reveal the condition because it's not yet severe enough to register, or the wrong tests are done altogether - as in the case of Wilson's Syndrome. In fact, Wilson's Syndrome is often diagnosed by the fact that the person has the symptoms of hypothyroid but the standard thyroid tests come back normal.
In the meantime, millions of exhausted, overweight people are desperately trying to find solutions, or they've given up altogether. And they're probably spending millions on starvation diets, the worst thing you can do, and anti-aging skin care products loaded with chemicals that could also worsen the symptoms.
If you have the above symptoms and are trying one thing after another to resolve them, find a doctor who is familiar with the various types of thyroid problems, including the more esoteric varieties like Wilson's Syndrome, and get thoroughly checked out.
And for those skin problems, check out shielding lotion. Now recommended by thousands of doctors, a good shielding lotion is a natural skin care product that bonds with the outer layer of the skin to form a new protective layer that keeps out chemicals and locks in natural moisture - something we tend to lose a lot of as we get older and when we're battling other conditions.
If you can get your thyroid functioning properly, your energy level will go back up and you'll feel more alert. It would also help you lose weight and restore your sense of well-being. And think how much money you'll save on skin care - you'll probably be able to get away with just one natural skin care treatment, like a shielding lotion! Resolving hypothyroidism is really a life-changing experience. Don't leave any stone unturned.
