(OPENPRESS) A FLINTSHIRE based Company is using their renewable energy expertise to assist in providing free heating and shelter for a few of the world's most poverty stricken people.
The Renewables Company Allbrite UK is supplying photo voltaic panels and other vital equipment for the new experimental 'housing pods' being commissioned by the Indian government.
The housing pods, which are fabricated from lightweight steel, measure 20 m x 40 m and each one can accommodate up to six people. They are being built as part of a pilot project by the Indian government to provide new sustainable homes for the most needy.
The housing pods will be used in the poorest parts of India, starting in the slums of Calcutta. The new low cost pods could also be used to as emergency housing and facilities in the aftermath of natural disasters.
Solar Photovoltaic panels supplied by the Flintshire based company Allbrite UK will generate electricity for low energy LED Lighting and ceiling fans provided by Allbrite.
Allbrite UK, which employs 12 people across its showroom and warehouse facility, is also supplying charge regulators for the pods to ensure the electricity generated is used to its maximum capabilities.
Russell White, Allbrite UK founder and managing director, said: "There are almost 25 million people in India living below the poverty line in rural areas, it is heart-warming to be involved in a project knowing the less fortunate will benefit.
"For many of these people any form of shelter would be a godsend. The fact that these pods offer lighting, sanitation and cooling is what makes them an exceptional break through.
"Families which live in the pods can create their own electricity and become truly self-sufficient. It is an honour to be involved in a scheme that will dramatically improve the lives of people who would normally be forgotten about."
The carbon-neutral pods — the first of their kind in India — are currently being trialed but eventually 30,000 could be produced.
Launched in 2001, Allbrite UK runs what is believed to be the UK's only eco-retail showroom.
The firm supplies and installs eco-products including solar thermal panels to heat water, solar photovoltaic panels to power electrical appliances, log-burning stoves and cookers, LED Lighting, Biomass boilers, Airsource Heat Pumps and a full range of Eco building products..
