Citizens Panel and Public will have Input into Pro-Reform Changes at Facility

Flint, MI (OPENPRESS) The Animal Control Subcommittee of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners is launching an Advisory Panel to assist them in addressing concerns related to the Genesee County Animal Control Shelter (GCAC). The panel will include members of GRACE (Genesee Residents for Animal Control Evolution) and FGCAS (Friends of Genesee County Animal Shelter). Other members of the panel will come from other animal advocate groups, rescue organizations and independent animal advocates. The meetings will be open to the public so that citizens may offer input and contribute ideas. The first meeting will be held on March 28 at 7 pm in the Commissioners Auditorium at the Genesee County Administration Building, 1101 Beach Street in Flint.

Newly elected Commissioner, Mark Young, said, "The time is ripe for a citizens' advisory panel to address concerns about our county animal shelter. We are very happy to see that several positive changes at the shelter have already taken place, such as offsite adoptions and extended hours, but people have many ideas for improving the shelter and we need a forum where they can contribute freely."

Roberta Angelo, spokesperson for GRACE voiced a similar sentiment. "The changes we have seen at Genesee County Animal Control are certainly welcome and appreciated, but there is still so much work to be done. Members of the panel will make recommendations to the Board's Sub Committee by identifying and prioritizing the issues and making well-researched suggestions for resolving them. We strongly feel that this needs to be done in a public forum and at a time when most people are free to attend." As the panel works on issues and formulates solutions, these will be presented to the Sub Committee for review and implementation. No staff members of Genesee County Animal Control will sit on the panel. "We are very excited to be given this valuable opportunity to lend our voices and collective strength to the important work to be done at our county shelter," said Ms. Angelo.
