aQuire Training Solutions announced this week that they are now offering a new online medication course specifically designed for senior care providers in California.

Oregon City, OR (OPENPRESS) December 29, 2007 -- Direct care staff in all Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly in California must have medication training, according to new regulations that take effect January 1, 2008.

The new law, Health and Safety Code Section 1569.69 requires that all RCFE Direct Care Staff must take 16 hours of initial training on specified topics relating to medications (including eight hours of hands-on shadowing and eight hours of other training or instruction), according to the new regulations, as well as a Provider Letter detailing the interpretation of these guidelines. The Provider Letter can be found online at the California Department of Social Services website.

The eight hour medication course was developed by the aQuire Training Solutions' team of registered nurses, educators, and senior care professionals. The course covers the basics of medication as well as the nine (9) specific training areas required by this new law.

The new California regulation "requires direct care staff in RCFEs, excluding licensed medical professionals, to meet specified training requirements, including passing an examination, in order to be able to assist residents with the self-administration of medications."

"Assisting residents in residential care with managing their medications is a task that requires a great deal of training to do correctly," says Sharon K. Brothers, aQuire Training Solutions' President and CEO. "It is also the area where the most life-threatening problems can arise, and where direct care staff typically has the least amount of training. This new requirement - and our new training course - can help non-licensed providers do a better job helping residents with their medications, while allowing them to remain in a home-like environment longer."

aQuire Training Solutions' unique approach to teaching involves a four-step process of telling stories to help learners synthesize content, involving learners in interactive online activities, motivating and inspiring to help learners grasp the significance of their work, and evaluating learning through use of online tests. Through this process, aQuire Training Solutions has been able to improve the training experience while creating more competent senior care staff. aQuire has developed a number of state-specific training programs in Oregon and California to meet the increasingly challenging task of equipping direct care staff perform their work in senior care environments.
