The American Society for Indexing Announces Plans for its 2011 Annual Conference in Providence

Submitted by: Top Hat Word & Index

2011-01-01 00:06:09

Wheat Ridge, CO (OPENPRESS) January 1, 2011 -- The 2011 annual conference for the American Society for Indexing (ASI), "Providential Transformation," will take place in Providence, Rhode Island from April 28-30. The event will feature two nationally known keynote speakers, as well as an array of workshops and seminars for all skill levels.

You do not need to be a member of ASI to attend. In addition to indexers, the conference is also designed for librarians, abstractors, editors, publishers, database producers, data searchers, product developers, technical writers, academic professionals, researchers, readers, and others concerned with indexing. Prospective indexers are encouraged to attend to further their understanding of indexing, and chat one-on-one with experts in the field.

Erin McKean and Joshua Tallent will headline the event as keynote speakers. Erin is the co-founder of Wordnik, a cutting-edge online dictionary; the goal of which is to show as much information as possible, as fast as possible, for every word in English. Before starting Wordnik, Erin was editor-in-chief for American Dictionaries at Oxford University Press. She has managed to transform herself from a paper-based dictionary editor to an online dictionary editor. She will focus on that transformation process during the conference.

Joshua Tallent is the eBook guru behind the scenes at KindleFormatting.com. He has formatted a large number of books from a diverse set of authors and subject categories. The transformation process a book goes through from hardcopy to electronic text is always a challenge; every book is different, and every project brings unique obstacles and issues. Joshua will provide us with perspective of one of the most challenging technical areas of transformation that indexers face.

The conference is at the Hilton Providence, a full-service luxury hotel located in the heart of downtown Providence at 21 Atwells Ave. The hotel is within walking distance of Historic Federal Hill, Providence's own Little Italy, and the Providence Place Mall. This historic New England city combines the accessibility and friendliness of a small town with the culture and sophistication of a big city.

The American Society for Indexing is a national association founded in 1968 to promote excellence in indexing and to increase awareness of the value of well-written, well-designed indexes. Further information about ASI and the conference is available at www.asindexing.org.
