(OPENPRESS) March 20, 2010 -- Shanghai is the place to be in 2010, the World EXPO adding a cherry on to the top of an already enticing mix of traditional and uber-modern. Shanghai is a city in a hurry, it is a fast paced, frenetic but fun and extremely safe place to visit and has already achieved the status as being one of the most interesting areas in the world. It offers a kaleidoscope of variety in people, tastes, sounds, architecture, activities and opportunities.
Shanghai has a rich jazz heritage having been a major jazz hub in the 1930s during the concessions era. In modern Shanghai, the thriving economy and taste of local and expatriate residents for this amazing musical style means that there is a blossoming community of resident musicians from all over the world.
Apart from a back bone of American jazz players, some of whom graduated from esteemed institutions such as Oberlin, Berklee, Eastman, Manhattan School of Music and the New England Conservatory, there are sizeable musical communities from Brazil, Columbia, France, Australia and Mauritius. The international musicians are complemented by a strong contingent of Chinese players, some of whom have studied overseas and performed internationally at the highest level. This unique demographic mix has led to many interesting projects and experimentations encompassing jazz, Latin, world music and traditional Chinese music fusions.
For language learners, Shanghai has the advantage of being a modern, open minded city where locals are happy to interact with overseas guests, especially with regard to language exchange. Most young Shanghainese have learned or are currently learning English or another language and are usually keen to practice with native speakers and usually happy to encourage guests to speak Chinese. Also, the 2010 World Expo will be in session, hence the current themes in Shanghai of good hosting and pleasant hospitality.
The Sino-Jazz Camp is a unique summer study program where students will get the chance to learn Chinese language appropriate to their study level, be introduced to important aspects of Chinese culture, have the chance to explore the World Expo site, go on organized short trips to neighboring historic towns and cities while also getting the chance to study jazz under the tutelage of some the finest jazz musicians based in Shanghai.
