Fencing Contractors Can Save Business And Consumers Money

Submitted by: Global Marketing Media

In today's tough economic times, it is no exaggeration to say that everyone is looking for ways to cut costs and save money. The housing industry and the construction trades have been particularly hard hit by economic recession. In many areas of the US, new building construction is at a standstill, and for those individuals and businesses trying to finance construction projects, money is very, very tight. For those considering construction projects involving fencing, there are cost savings that can be found if you are willing to invest in a little planning and ask a few questions.

(OPENPRESS) May 5, 2009 -- Although it tends to fly under the radar, a high percentage of outdoor building projects involves fencing in one capacity or another. And fence construction can add significantly to the overall cost of any building project. These costs, however, can vary widely depending on who is involved in creating the blueprints for the construction project.

"Fencing construction is not quite as simple as it might seem," says Gary Siewert of S&S Fence (www.fencing-contractors.com) . S&S Fence is one of Sacramento, California's best-known and most well respected fencing contractor companies. "The fact of the matter is, building a fence is an integral part of a fairly high percentage of many building projects. Whether it's a commercial project, residential construction, or a governmental or public works project -- many times part of the blueprints and architectural plans call for some kind of fencing. And if certain factors are not taken into account, the cost of building a fence can vary enormously."

Siewert notes that because fencing is a seperate sub-specialty of construction, it is an area which can be difficult for many general contractors, architects, and building designers to keep track of and be totally up to date on. As a result, blueprints can call for specifications which are either out of date or unnecessarily cost prohibitive. This can dramatically escalate the overall cost of the bid and the cost of the entire construction project itself.

"It really comes down to a lack of familiarity with the fencing industry," explained Siewert in reference to the wide variance in potential cost for fence construction. "An architect would virtually have to work on-site with us in order to gain enough familiarity with the fencing industry in order to accurately represent the proper fencing materials and design called for in the blueprints -- and that is simply impractical for an architect to invest that kind of time."

As a result, an architect can call for a particular type of fence or fencing material in the blueprints which is unnecessarily pricey or expensive. This can especially occur when an architect names a specific fencing manufacturer in the blueprints. Unfortunately, no one but the fencing contractor may be aware of this at the time the blueprints are drawn, and in most instances the fencing contractor will not have the opportunity to add his input until well after the fact.

"We had a fencing project not long ago which called for a particular set of gates as specified by the architect and the blueprints. The problem was these particular set of gates were extremely expensive, and unnecessarily added many tens of thousands of dollars to the fencing project," says Siewert. "Fortunately, we were able to get in touch with the architect and point out that there was a much less expensive gate which in no way detracted from the aesthetics or functionality of the fence. It provided quite a cost savings much to the delight of everyone concerned."

The reason that architects and designers sometimes name specific manufacturers in their blueprints is because the manufacturers, being smart businessmen, have salespeople that asked the architects to do just that. It is a good marketing strategy -- however, it is something that the potential fencing consumer should be aware of if it is seen in the plans.

Siewert offers the following tips in order to save money on any construction project that involves a fence:

1) Have a good idea the purpose of your fence. Are you erecting a fence for decorative or process? Is it designed to be a barrier of some kind? Or, is it intended to fulfill a multiplicity of purposes. "The reason for constructing the fence is essential," says Siewert, "then, as the fencing contractor, I can potentially save the customer a lot money once I know what the purpose of the fence is. Having a firm idea of what the fences for can lead to real cost savings in many instances."

2) Check with the architect or designer to see if they have had some experience with the type of fence you are looking to build. "This can be a touchy point because you don't want to offend the architect or designer," offers Siewert diplomatically. "But, as I've said, many architects are not always familiar with every aspect of the fencing industry, so it pays to ask."

3) If the architect or designer really does not know much about fencing, consider finding one who does -- or, if the architect is part of a firm, ask whether or not someone in the architectural firm has experienced with the fencing industry.

4) As another option, have a reputable fencing contractor consult with the architect or design that aspect of the construction project themselves. "At S&S Fence we're more than happy to consult with architects, general contractors or the public when it comes to designing fences," Siewert says regarding the design process. "Most architects appreciate your input because usually we can provide suggestions that enhance the design that are very cost-effective. Many times we can make suggestions that only someone in the industry would know about."

5) If your plans are already can lead to or the blueprints are already drawn up, consult with the fencing contractor as a sidecheck to see if he has anything to add that might save you money. As noted above, this relatively simple action may lead to considerable savings on the project.

"In this day and age just about everyone is looking to save money wherever they can," says Siewert in closing. "And while we can't guarantee it, in many instances we as fencing contractors are going to be able to offer suggestions that will reduce costs and save money on the fence building aspect of a construction project."
