Courtroom View Network Announces the Availability of Florida Tobacco Trial Online After Mistrial

Submitted by: Edge Legal Marketing

2009-01-30 00:06:50

Atlanta, GA (OPENPRESS) January 30, 2009 -- Courtroom View Network, a division of Courtroom Connect, the leading provider of advanced communication services to the legal industry, today announces the availability of Hess v. RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. online after a mistrial halted the original hearing back in December. Hess v. RJ Reynolds is the first of the "Engle progeny" tobacco liability suits to go to trial. It will be heard in the court of Hon. Jeffrey Streitfeld in Broward County, Florida. Opening Statements began on Monday, February 2nd.

The Hess case is the first of the individual tobacco suits to go to trial in the wake the Florida Supreme's Court 2006 decision disbanding a class of an estimated 700,000 Floridians who sued the tobacco companies. That case resulted in the largest damage verdict in the U.S., $145 billion. As a result of the Florida Supreme Court decision, tobacco cases in the state will now be tried one by one. There are now an estimated 4,000 tobacco suits pending in Florida state courts. Elaine Hess is the widow of Stuart Hess, a smoker who died of lung cancer.

"This is going to be a highly watched case and we are pleased to make it available to more people," stated Shelly Albaum, COO, Courtroom Connect. "Not only will observers be watching for how the lawyers for each side fashion their arguments - which could become models for future tobacco trials --they will be watching Judge Jeffrey Streitfeld. His management of the case could become a template for other Florida judges." Streitfeld, who has been on the bench for two decades, sits in a special part of Broward County Court that hears complex civil litigation.

Courtroom View Network will show the Hess trial on its web site, www.courtroomlive.com. The trial will be shown in full, without commercials or commentary. The trial will also be indexed for on-demand viewing on courtroomviewnetwork.com.

Courtroom View Network offers streaming trial footage directly to a computer - wherever internet access is available. The technology is integrated as a web-based service, designed to facilitate the delivery of realtime streaming information to anyone, anywhere. Subscribers of the service can remotely access live trials online, complete with exhibits and evidence.

Courtroom View Network brings five years of experience of web casting high-stakes civil litigation to the Hess trial.
