Owners In The Driving Seat When It Comes To Scrap Cars

(OPENPRESS) September 13, 2008 -- Just a few years ago, drivers would be charged anything upwards of £50 by scrap yards able to house the unwanted vehicle but now, with the rising prices of steel, aluminium and copper, they are in the driving seat when it comes to taking the vehicle off the road. However, rising prices have brought with them a rise in scams with cars being stolen and reports of owners paid an unfair price for their car.
Natalie Fear, director of Vehicle Disposals Ltd said, "Almost 68% of the modern car is made up of ferrous metals so there's now a huge incentive for recovery agents. If you're looking to dispose of an unwanted vehicle, you should check that the firm disposing of the car is an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) and licensed by the Environmental Agency. Expect to receive upwards of £50 for the old car. You should never pay for it to be hauled away."
The registered keeper of the car must also ensure that they complete the necessary paperwork or face a hefty fine. A good car disposal agent will provide copies of the required Vehicle Surrender Form. "Again, a trustworthy recovery agent will insist that these formalities are adhered to so don't be afraid to ask for advice. If you feel you're being pressured or your concerns are brushed under the carpet, seek another agent to destroy your old car," added Natalie Fear.
