Carolina Regional Cancer Center Receives ACR Accreditation For Radiation Oncology

Submitted by: Fuel Interactive

2008-06-26 23:00:53

(OPENPRESS) June 27, 2008 -- Carolina Regional Cancer Center (CRCC) MUSC Hollings Cancer Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in Radiation Oncology Services as the result of a comprehensive review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The accreditation signifies that CRCC has met stringent, nationally accepted standards for radiation oncology facilities as established by the ACR. CRCC is the first facility and at present the only facility to be accredited by the ACR in the state of South Carolina.

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualification of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. The surveyors report their findings to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.

"Being the first and only facility in the state to receive ACR accreditation in Radiation Oncology is a tribute to our strong commitment to providing the highest quality of care for our patients," said Steve Bass, MD, Medical Director. "The receiving of the ACR accreditation plus the upcoming addition of TomoTherapy to our treatment capabilities illustrates our commitment to patient care and our state of the art treatment technologies," continued Dr. Bass.

"The ACR Accreditation is a rigorous review process and validates that our facility meets nationally accepted standards of care. The accreditation demonstrates to patients, referring physicians, peers, regulatory agencies and payers our commitment to high standards for radiation therapy and quality assurance," added Patricia Price, RTT, Director of Clinical Operations.

CRCC and MUSC Hollings Cancer Center are continuing their joint efforts to broaden the local availability of state-of-the-art cancer treatments and quality patient care.
