Upstate, NY (OPENPRESS) December 4, 2007 -- The pre-dawn morning might find 10 year old Laura Stockman contemplating how she can make her world better, more like the one she wants to live in now and when she gets older.
You won’t find her wrapped up against the cold, pre-dawn morning standing in lines waiting to be the first in the doors at her local malls or retail outlet stores. Instead, she is wrapped against the cold completing her first act of kindness and giving by shoveling the snow covered sidewalks for both her family and her neighbors. Laura says she "wanted this to be a surprise" and didn't want "credit for doing a job".
When asked why she decided to make a difference, Laura mentions her grandfather and how he used to call her "Lit-tle Laura" and how it always made her "feel big and strong inside". She says, "he believed that everybody could make the world a better place, not just by doing big things, but doing small things too".
Her mom, Angela Stockman has even helped Laura set up a blog. Angela revealed that Laura is not only making a difference in her neighborhood, she is "encouraging other children and adults to do [so] as well". Laura's mom went on to state, "she is saving her allowance for the next twenty five days [and] will monitor those who participate in the project, [one of whom] will win a 25 dollar donation to the charity of their choice."
Laura says, "Even if you can’t do something every day, you can do one small thing to help make your world a better place."
She invites you to participate by going to the blog, which her mother is monitoring, and leave your stories of how you are creating the world you want to live in now. Laura will be sharing her stories there as well.
