Lower East Side, NY (OPENPRESS) August 13, 2007 -- Get your taste buds ready for the Seventh Annual New York City International Pickle Day (Pickle Day) to be held Sunday, September 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. Co-sponsored by the Lower East Side Business Improvement District and the NY Food Museum, , the free multi-cultural event features pickles from around the world, sharing culinary practice, home canning tips, exhibitions, great music and tasty treats, including an abundance of free pickle samples.

“This year we’re celebrating the fact that pickles can be manufactured in a Green environment - sustainably, and so close to home it could be in your kitchen! Transportation Alternatives is supplying valet bicycle parking, the Science Barge from NY Sun Works will flaunt their produce and local vendors will share their bounty. Pickles make fruits and vegetables available year around, without importing from the other side of the globe,” says Nancy Ralph, NY Food Museum Director. New exhibits this year will feature meat preservation (corned beef, oysters, herring) and the historic restaurant fixture, the pickle bowl.

Pickle Day picklers include old favorites and new comers, and demonstrate that the pickling tradition is strong in the hearts of all New Yorkers. Exhibits feature techniques, recipes, and stories from home — whether home is in Malaysia or the Lower East Side. And it’s not just about cucumbers — it’s radishes, tomatoes, okra, cabbage, fish, meat, carrots, beans, onions, eggs, limes, mangos, peaches, beets — anything that gets preserved in brine.

Children’s activities and pickler histories bring to life a world of pickling traditions from the immigrant communities of India, Germany, Poland, China, Japan, Scandinavia, Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East, Africa. As always, Pickle Day welcomes stories and information from anyone who can help document our pickle heritage.

Pickle Day is made possible by local sponsors and volunteers. You can support our efforts and participate by donating cash, staff or publicity. “Pickle Day expresses the true character of the Lower East Side, the home of immigrants from Russia to the Caribbean, from Italy to Vietnam,” says Roberto Ragone, Director of the LES BID. “This year look for more store participation so you can get a little shopping done at the same time.”

Afterall, Pickle Day lives in the Lower East Side, where primary attractions are music, nightlife, garments, and pickles.
