Pittsburgh Senior Care Agency Praises National Alzheimer's Plan

(OPENPRESS) August 1, 2012 -- Pittsburgh Senior Care praised the National Alzheimer's Plan in an interview this week, but also indicated that the public may not be aware of the Obama administration program that seeks to aggressively combat Alzheimer's disease over the next few years.

Joy Holte, owner of the Pittsburgh-based senior care agency, said that the National Alzheimer's Plan is part of the National Alzheimer's Project Act that was passed in early 2011.

"The President took this issue seriously and mandated that HHS come up with a plan. So far they've done a great job and it's a powerful feeling to see hundreds of millions of dollars being put in the right hands as part of the battle against Alzheimer's."

Under the Act the Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services was required to develop and implement a plan to fight Alzheimer's - a brain disease that causes dementia and a troubling decline in overall health in senior citizens. According to the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, the plan primarily consists of major funding for new and continued Alzheimer's research, as well as money for support services for families that suffer from this condition.

Holte said that for some people, the plan may make funds available through public health programs for families to get assistance such as in home care or assisted living.

"We've been waiting for a plan like this because it helps us do what we're most passionate about: helping elderly people live independent lives from the comfort of their own home. Unfortunately not every family can afford these services, so the National Alzheimer's Plan is working to address this."

There's also a component of the plan that is dedicated to improving education and awareness about Alzheimer's disease, which can greatly aid caregivers and family members who need information and guidance.
