Obese Workforce Requires Ergonomic Solutions by Rotacaster

Submitted by: TR Cutler, Inc.

2012-06-19 18:00:21

(OPENPRESS) June 20, 2012 -- According to Peter McKinnon, managing director of Rotacaster, "Obesity is changing the very nature of the workplace and requires a new and innovative approach to safety and ergonomic benefits."

The cost of injuries has increased and changed as worker fitness has diminished and obesity becomes rampant. The cost of training, loss of expertise, and difficulty in enforcing SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) is altered as an aging and weight challenged workforce has limited mobility and more prone to injury. The shift in the fitness levels of the workforce has created an inverse reliance from SOPs to Equipment. Previously it was 20% equipment based ergonomic to avoid injury, now almost 80% of the reliance is on tool and technologies that accommodate this new, less fit, workforce. Rotacaster has recognized this trend and developed a myriad of products and tools to deal with this new and fast-growing trend.

From Rotatrucks to assembly tables are better-suited to ensure smooth consistent motion and reduced injuries. The Rotacaster omni wheel is well-suited to robotics because it is tougher with a fully injection-molded frame ensuring no lost rollers. Engineering grade polymer structure with no steel inserts or pins and choice of polyurethane rollers guarantees optimum durability. The Rotacaster omni wheel is faster because rollers deliver greater traction and acceleration. Applications for the Rotacaster range from material handling equipment (hand trucks, trolleys, dollies, carts, skates) to shopping carts and luggage; from conveyor transfers, pipe rollers, and other inverted applications to robotics and patient lifts in medical settings.

Rotacaster, while fixed in a primary orientation, facilitates movement in any direction without the need of a traditional swivel mount. Omni-wheels have been used in conveyor and light-duty robotics applications for years, yet the Rotacaster multi-directional wheel is engineered to provide additional robustness, durability, and ride quality necessary as an industrial floor wheel.

McKinnon shared the company mission, noting, "At Rotacaster Wheel Limited, we truly believe our unique products have the potential to revolutionize workplaces by offering real equipment solutions that create a safer working environment. With core values such as safety, quality and innovation, our award winning company strives to design ergonomic products that are practical and that will reduce overall costs by reducing workplace injury and increasing productivity."
