(OPENPRESS) June 14, 2012 -- Together with chef Teage Ezard, Paul Kelly developed the Black by Ezard restaurant design with the goal of creating a fresh take on the traditional steak house. Using carefully selected materials, Kelly created an atmosphere of approachable elegance that enhances Black's unique cuisine.
Each element of Black's striking interior design was chosen for its ability to bring to life the restaurant's theme. Of particular note is Kelly's use of timber in his design for Black. With appealing qualities well-suited to interior design, timber was an ideal choice for creating Black's uniquely welcoming atmosphere.
Timber is a singularly versatile material with attributes perfect for use in restaurant design. Perhaps most notably, timber can be cut or bent to achieve a wide variety of shapes that satisfy a designer's artistic vision. At the same time, timber's strength allows it to perform a variety of structural functions. This natural strength is due to the direction and structure of timber's interlocked fibers, and varies among types of timber. Timber's strength and beauty is ideally suited to creating custom furnishings, such as Black's striking rustic high table carved from local Black Butt timber.
Kelly's use of timber in Black's design creates an ambiance that entices guests with its stimulation of the senses. Timber's striking colors provide visual appeal while its grainy textures or smooth, variegated surfaces both draw the eye and invite touch. Sensual and appealing, timber is an enduring, classic choice of materials perfect for use in restaurant design.
The warm tones and rich textures of the timber used throughout Black's interior evokes the spirit of the local farm country that acted as one of the inspirations for Black's design. As a natural material, timber calls to mind the freshness of farm-grown foods while infusing the atmosphere with a sense of comfort and familiarity. Timber's organic, nearly universal appeal plays a significant role in creating an environment that invites guests to feel at ease.
In addition to building upon the inspiration provided by New South Wales farm country, the timber of Black's design helps create a unique, inspired steak house environment. Black's sturdy yet elegant chopping block style tables are reminiscent of rustic steak houses of years past and the time-honored butcher shop. At the same time, the sleek, smooth finish of Black's timber gives the restaurant a luxurious, sophisticated style. By bringing timber's classic appeal into a modern design, Kelly has achieved a dramatic fusion of the modern and the traditional.
As part of Black's distinctive combination of materials, timber creates a lush, pleasing atmosphere in which guests can relax and immerse themselves in the dining experience. Through his skilled use of timber, Paul Kelly has created a beautiful, timeless design perfectly suited both to Black's distinctive menu and to the character of the city of Sydney. His Black by Ezard restaurant design stands at the forefront of modern restaurant design.
