Cary, NC (OPENPRESS) June 12, 2012 -- The Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel are pleased to announce that Redmond Self, a high school senior and member of the Cary Teen Council, is the inaugural recipient of their History Scholarship. The $750 award was presented on June 6 by President Ed Yerha at the Friends' monthly board meeting. Also on hand for the presentation were Redmond's parents, Mark Self and Lisa Ives, as well as his aunt and brother.

Self, a student at Raleigh Charter High School, was nominated for the award by his history teacher, Betsy Newmark. In her letter of recommendation, Newmark described Redmond as "never having a nasty word to say about anyone… having a keen sense of humor and having a true interest in helping others."

Also contributing to his unanimous selection is his appreciation for local history and historic preservation, which was expressed in the inspiring, insightful essay he submitted on "The Role of Education in Making Cary What it is Today."

In the fall, Self will attend Villanova University where he plans to pursue a double major in history and religious studies.

The Friends of Page-Walker established the History Scholarship in 2012 to advance their mission of enriching the community by serving as guardians for the Page-Walker Arts & History Center, by advocating preservation of Cary historic sites, by archiving history and facilitating history education, and by promoting the cultural arts.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to a high school senior who exhibits an aptitude and passion for the study of history that could result in a career as a history teacher, museum educator, historian or historic preservationist. The award includes a permanent plaque with the recipient's name to be displayed at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center.

The Friends' dedication and deep commitment are driving forces behind Cary's historic preservation. They take great pride in preserving the beauty and history of Cary and hope to encourage those attributes in area youth through this scholarship.

"We are delighted to present the Friends' first History Scholarship to Redmond Self," said Yerha. "He has certainly demonstrated the qualities and enthusiasm we felt best embodied the spirit of the award. It is quite rewarding for us to support Mr. Self in furthering his education and ultimately, his career pursuits in the field of history."
