(OPENPRESS) May 12, 2012 -- The official journal of the American Society Of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) published another astounding study. It was conducted by the ASPS to reveal and really know the people who are considering plastic surgery as well as their motivations. The results were unexpectedly surprising as it debunked stereotypes which are commonly associated with plastic surgery.
Walter Erhardt, MD, chair of the ASPS Public Education Committee said, "Finally we have a study that reveals the truth about real people considering plastic surgery, it's not just women over 50 with high incomes who are seriously considering procedures. It's the young mom next door, the waiter who served you coffee this morning, even your coworker."
The study involved 644 people who were considering plastic surgery within the following two years. 191 or 30% of these participants had the average income of less than $30,000. Only 41% had annual income of $31, 000 to $60,000 and 16% had annual incomes of $61,000 to $90,000. Only 13% have more than $90,000 worth of income per year.
Age also played a vital role as 26% of the participants were 18 to29 years old. 38% had ages 30 to 49 and 36% were 50 and older. A huge 81% said they have not undergone plastic surgery and 19% had at least one procedure experience. When the interview was done, most expressed they could reach emotional, psychological and social improvements if they undergo plastic surgery. All in all, the study found that patients come from all economic levels and age ranges. Also, their motivations were more personal and are not full of vanity which is contrary to what we usually think.
According to a renowned plastic surgery service provider http://faceliftofbeverlyhills.com/, "It's a good thing we now have these figures. At least it will be easier for us surgeons to educate our patients…"
Finally, Dr. Erhardt expressed his thoughts, "ASPS is dedicated to educating potential plastic surgery patients by offering quality information and referrals to experienced, certified plastic surgeons, We were thrilled to learn many patients are actively seeking information before having any cosmetic procedure, helping ensure a safe and successful outcome."
