Skype, Picasa and Chrome, among the software most valued by the users

Barcelona, April 18th 2012 - Softonic is pleased to announce the winners of the eighth edition of the prestigious Softonic Awards, which were chosen by the users from the company's websites around the world in ten different languages: Spanish, English, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, Polish, Dutch, Chinese and Japanese.
During almost two months, Softonic users had the opportunity to vote for the best software on their site, which reveals a final list of the best valued programs in each local market.
Regarding the English version of Softonic, users have chosen the best programs for Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and Webapps platforms. Skype, VLC media player and Avast were awarded on the Windows category, while Google Chrome, Picasa and iTunes were both winners for the Mac platform. Also, Google+ was the most voted app for both iPhone and Android categories.
About this, Tom Clarke, Content Director of the English version of Softonic, pointed out that "Google+ winning best app for iPhone comes as a real surprise and it won for Android too, which goes to show that Google+ is more popular than many people realize". Regarding other winners from the list, Clarke highlights three programs: "as usual, Skype remains a hugely popular app on Windows and Mac. For an international site like Softonic, that's not surprising: people love to stay in touch with each other. FIFA 12 is one of the great points of debate in the games section of Softonic versus Pro Evolution Soccer since, this year, Pro Evolution is winning in terms of downloads but FIFA wins in votes. Finally, Google Chrome is the clear winner in the browser category on both Windows and Mac".
He also added that "VLC media player maintains its place among the best applications available, though iTunes has caught up with it on the Mac platform. It's also interesting to see that free antivirus like Avast! consistently wins out against the more traditional paid options".
