Innovation for Gliders

Submitted by: selective-aileron

2011-08-16 00:01:58

Munich/ Germany (OPENPRESS) August 16, 2011 -- The selective aileron system, a new development specifically for restrospective installation in gliders, enables improved flight characteristics and performance.

A mechanical control unit optimises the deflection of the ailerons thereby reducing undesirable drag. This results in enhanced flight characteristics in turns, better low airspeed properties and improved general handling.
How does the selective aileron system work? How does it affect the aerodynamics?

Alexander Krüger, the inventor and designer of the selective aileron system, explains that: "generally speaking, the downward deflected aileron on the outside of a banked turn generates undesirable drag which produces a force opposing the turn. Current standard technology like differential ailerons offers only a compromise which does not completely negate this effect. The selective aileron system eliminates the undesired effect completely, and that is brand new.

The new system, which utilises a compensation mechanism, exclusively controls the aileron on the inside of the turn. The aileron on the outside of the turn is maintained in a neutral position and therefore produces no drag."

Fortunately, the clever mechanics require very little space and necessitates installation work only in the cockpit. In essence, the control column is replaced by the new compact control unit. No other modifications to the glider is necessary. Selective-Aileron is planned to be produced as a ready-for-use kit for rapid installation.

Alexander Krüger is a trained aircraft technician and glider pilot. He has invented selective aileron, an aerodynamic improvement for gliders. This invention is subject to the patent application PCT/EP2009/059584. Selective aileron is a brand new development for gliders.
The system completely avoids adverse yaw. When rolling into turns, no additional application of rudder is needed.

The selective aileron system is suitable for all gliders. The low weight kit is easy to install and ready for immediate use. The installation takes place only in the cockpit by replacing the original control column.
