The Quest Trend Magazine has published the market shares of real time Ethernet from 2005 to 2012 and the planning of the machine-builders until 2015. This concerns EtherCat, Ethernet IP, Modbus TCP, Powerlink, ProfiNet, Sercos III and VARAN.

(OPENPRESS) The publication in the Quest Trend Magazine is based on four representative market surveys from Quest TechnoMarketing in the years 2005 to 2012.

2005 each second machine-builder implemented Ethernet, eight years later in 2012 it already were 86% of the machine-builders. Until 2015 the planning of the machine-builders will intensify the further use of Ethernet so that 93% of the machine-builders will then use Ethernet at the machines.

The use of real time Ethernet forms the motor of this spreading. Real time Ethernet transmits at the same time process data and control commands having been modified in various ways by various automation manufacturers for this purpose. That led to various real time Ethernet protocols.

Real time Ethernet rapidly spread from 21% in 2005 to 71% in 2012. Until 2015 83% of the machine-builders are willing to use real time Ethernet at the machines. The exclusive use of TCP/IP, however, is declining and will be limited to only 10% of the machine-builders until 2015.

78% of the machine-builders with real time Ethernet at the machines are using the protocols EtherCat, Powerlink or ProfiNet in its three versions. This value in the year 2012 is to rise to 81% until 2015.

The dynamic growth of real time Ethernet among the machine-builders will mainly favor ProfiNet and its three versions. ProfiNet is to rise from 42% (2012) to 47% until 2015 according to the planning of the machine-builders. EtherCat and Powerlink will almost grow as fast as the market. EtherCat showed a market share of 21% among the machine-builders in 2012 that will be 20% until 2015. Powerlink is slightly to drop from 15% (2012) to 14% until 2015.

Ethernet IP, in-house solutions/others, Modbus TCP, Sercos III, UDP with PTP (not contained in the diagram) and VARAN were used by 22% of the machine-builders for special applications in 2012. Altogether these protocols are to develop a little less dynamic than the market, so that their market share among the machine-builders will decrease to 19% until 2015. Sercos III makes an exception, its proportion will more than double from 3% (2012) to 8% until 2015.

The spreading of real time Ethernet marks the most dynamic technology change in the automation of machines.
