Providence O'Christmas Trees 2012 Presenting Artist Olivier Wevers has been awarded a 2012 Mayor's Arts Award. Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn will honor recipients of the 2012 Mayor's Arts Awards at a public ceremony at Seattle Center at noon on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012. He will also open Bumbershoot®: Seattle's Music & Arts Festival for a free public preview that day.
Seattle, WA (OPENPRESS) June 8, 2012 -- Providence O'Christmas Trees 2012 Presenting Artist Olivier Wevers has been awarded a 2012 Mayor's Arts Award. Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn will honor recipients of the 2012 Mayor's Arts Awards at a public ceremony at Seattle Center at noon on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012. He will also open Bumbershoot®: Seattle's Music & Arts Festival for a free public preview that day.
The awards recognize the accomplishments of artists, arts and cultural organizations and community members committed to enriching their communities through the arts. The public nominates recipients for the award, and the Seattle Arts Commission recommends recipients to the mayor for final selection. The awards, which are non-monetary, are presented each year.
Wevers was named a Principal Dancer with Seattle's Pacific Northwest Ballet in 1997, where he performed for four years before retiring last June. He is now Artistic Director and choreographer of Whim W'Him. As Providence O'Christmas Trees Presenting Artist he will create a special Christmas Tree depicting his art for the O'Christmas Trees events, which take place Nov. 26-28, 2012. Wevers said he is looking forward to creating a Christmas tree for Providence O'Christmas Trees that honors the seniors served by Providence Senior and Community Services
About Providence O'Christmas Trees: Providence Health & Services' Senior and Community Services' largest annual fundraiser takes place Nov. 26 to 28, 2012, at The Westin Seattle. A variety of activities, centering on the auction of beautifully designed holiday trees, are planned to engage the thousands of people of all ages who attend or happen into The Westin, 1900 Fifth Ave. Funds raised benefit the poor, sick and vulnerable served through healthcare, housing and hospice. Providence O'Christmas Trees in 2011 raised $1.1 million for the following programs: Providence ElderPlace, Heritage House at the Market, Providence Hospice of Seattle, Providence Home Services, Providence Marianwood, Providence Infusion and Pharmacy Services, Providence Supportive Housing and Providence Mount St. Vincent, all located in King County. About Olivier Wevers: Originally from Brussels, Belgium, Wevers danced as a Principal with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet prior to joining Pacific Northwest Ballet in 1997. In 2009 he founded his own dance company, Whim W'Him. Last year he retired from Pacific Northwest Ballet to focus solely on his new career as artistic director and freelance choreographer. Since its foundation, Whim W'Him has performed for audiences in Seattle, New York, Copenhagen, Victoria BC, and Palm Desert.
Along with his creations for Whim W'Him, Wevers has choreographed works for numerous companies in Canada, Japan, and the United States, including: Northwest Dance Project, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Spectrum Dance Theater, Seattle Dance Project, and Cornish Dance Theater.
